Now here is a step by step guide..kidding, just kidding!
Yesterday, along with my brother and friends, we went for a Qiyamul Layl program. I was told to prepare a short reminder. So right there, I sort of improvised and decided out of nowhere to talk about watermelons.
“Assalamu Alaikum! Can you guys hear me?
Like many cultures across the world, it is very common that we spend about a good 5 to 10 mins in picking the best watermelon, when we are at the supermarket! A knock here, and another knock here. “Hmm, I think I got one! We will take this one home honey.” And as you walk towards the check-out, you feel like giving yourself a tap on the back saying, “Good job!” and, “Wow, this is gonna be good!”.
And sometimes it is an endless battle if you end up going with a group of people. They are not going to agree with you, be it your parents, siblings, or friends. And you actually think you got this! But you hear them saying, ”No, I really think this one is better!” “How do you know?” “Your last pick last time was very watery!” “Today, it’s going to be my choice!” The talks continue and so does the analyzing. Some say if it’s hollow and really green, then that’s the one! Other say that’s not true, these ones are GMOed so the knocking trick won’t work
)…Until someone has to compromise, “Ugh, fine. We will take this one, but we will see when we get home.” Hmm.
Now, my brothers and sisters! Imagine we did the same in perfecting our salaat. With the same scrutiny and valued time, over analyzing again and again so that we may come to perfecting our ibadaat. Our worship of Allah. And in this case, worshiping Allah SubhanAllahu Wata’Ala through an action that is deemed responsible for one’s affair on the day of Judgement.
“On the authority of Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
Allah SubhanAllahu Wata’Ala says: The first of his actions for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Resurrection will be his Salah. If they are in order, then he will have prospered and succeeded; and if they are wanting, then he will have failed and lost. [..].” - [At-Tirmidhi (also by Abu Dawud, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and Ahmad).]“
Will the rest be good or bad? A good watermelon to feast on at the end of the day?
Are you going to make the right choice? You choose.
BarakAllahu fik! Assalamu Alaikum “

And if you are actually curious in wanting to know how to choose the right watermelon? Then here are some tips for you:
1. The knocking trick. It is a bit controversial. They say when you knock and you hear it’s hollow inside, it’s a good watermelon. While some people believe it’s a complete myth, because how do you ‘define’ the hollowness for a ‘good’ watermelon?.. so anyways, avoid it (unless your parents are there though, hehe) Your parents might be right too, who knows? It could be a special science practiced correctly by few.
2. It should be dark green in colour in most cases, depending on diff. types of watermelon. Should be firm, symmetrical, and no bruises!
3. Heavy! Yes.
4. This one might really tell you, the “ground spot” where the watermelon stem attaches to the fruit, should be yellow. It means it’s ripened, avoid white or green!
